Club History or Details : The Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity worship commenced against the background of a heated political ambience during the British regime. In the history of Durga Puja in North Calcutta, the aristrocrat families and Rajbaris had their triumphant assertion. Community worships were regarded there as outcast. In consonance with worships held at the aristrocrat families organised by the so-called “Babu Communities” of British-Calcutta. Some eminent persons of the locality like Late Rajen Ghosh, Late Amal Sarkar , Late Baidyanath Da, Late Dr. Shudhanshu Banerjee , Sri Samir Sen and others convened a meeting in the month of November in the year 1939 and they decided to start their own Puja. At last in the year 1940 the first Durga Puja was started under the Presidentship of Late Shri Laxmi Kanta Mullick and the supervision of “O” Club (Zero Club). In the mean time some organizers of Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin, got involved in the Quit India movement and the Non-violent movement conducted by Gandhiji. As a consequence they had to confront the stern measures of ruthless authorities. But the worship did not stop. Then Police administration put pressure on the organizers to cease the puja during the riot of 1946. Despite the pressure exerted by the ruler, the Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity did not surrender. In the post Independence era Late Hirendra Nath Sarkar, the I.G of West Bengal Police was one of the Patrons of this Puja. Late Dinen Roy, Biswanath Paul, Lochan Mitra, Shasti charan Das, Shishir Mitra, Sitanath Paul, Dulal Basak, Harimohan Seal, Jagannath Paul etc took active part in this Puja. This Puja embodying the ancient heritage of North Kolkata is a crowning glory of our locality. It is not only moving on with a tradition but it has something new it-it is also a social responsibility, Blood Donation camp, consciousness of Thalassemia, financial help to the poor, distribution of Medicines –such programmes are organised by the Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity in the context of this Durga Puja. As the preserver and carrier of Bengali Culture, we take a pledge to eradicate the social blemishes and show the path of light to the society uninterruptedly.
